González Cataráin, María Dolores
b. 1954, Ordizia (Guipúzcoa); d. 1986,
   Ordizia
Political activist (nom de guerre "Yoyes")
González Cataráin was a member of ETA's "military" wing, exiled in France (1973) and later Mexico (1979). In the late 1970s she joined the organization's leadership, one of very few women to do so. She subsequently regularized her situation under the reinserción measures, returning to Spain in 1985. On 10 September 1986, while walking her 3-year-old child, she was assassinated by an ETA commando because, having availed herself of the government's reinserción scheme, she returned to her home village in defiance of death-threats from her erstwhile comrades. Her killing was condemned by all sectors of Basque opinion other than supporters of Herri Batasuna, and marked a turning-point in attitudes towards ETA among more moderate nationalists.
